Sedation for KidsAt Mercer Island Pediatric Dentistry we offer sedation dentistry to children with increased anxiety or extensive dental problems, and to children with special needs, to ensure that oral care is provided in a comfortable environment that is free of emotional or psychological trauma. Sedation methods range from Nitrous Oxide to General Anesthesia. Many children who need General Anesthesia early in their treatment will develop enough trust and confidence over time that they can eventually be treated with only the help of Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous Oxide A small amount of nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") can be inhaled through the nose to reduce anxiety and help some children relax during dental procedures, even while they remain awake and interactive. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this method of light sedation as a safe and effective way to help reduce anxiety in children during dental treatment. General Anesthesia Occasionally, very young children with extensive dental problems, or children who have special needs or complex medical conditions will benefit from general anesthesia during dental procedures. Depending upon a child's medical history and needs, Mercer Island Pediatric Dentistry can provide this full-sleep option in our office. When general anesthesia is used, medicines are given by a board-certified Anesthesiologist to help a child fall completely asleep. The child is then continuously monitored throughout the procedure to ensure that he or she is comfortable and safe. Procedures that require general anesthesia generally require 2 to 3 hours. In addition, more than one appointment may be necessary to coordinate a pre-procedural anesthesia consultation and evaluation.
